He goes on to describe the historical context, development and principal themes of the great Ecumenical Councils and the central figures who shaped their theology, from the fourth-century Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed to the eighth-century council in defense of icons. To this study he adds the council of 879, which began revealing some significant issues between East and West.
